Embodied Performing Arts Program

Requirements for graduation and certification

Course Completion

To graduate, students must attend the 12 SME courses with passing grades and pass the culminating competency evaluation. No later than six months after competency evaluation, students must have submitted all written homework reports, personal session forms, and complementary studies reports, as outlined below.

Homework

Movement Therapy Students Working

Homework is intended to guide students in integrating the material, communicating it to others, and in the process of self-study. There are two categories of homework: required and contracted.

Required Homework

A written self-evaluation for each course

Twenty written case studies on sessions with individuals

Ten written reports on teaching sessions

Contracted Homework

Each student creates an individualized contract for additional studies, based on your interests and life situation. The contract includes a minimum of two activities. The following list provides some suggestions:

Read and report on three books from the book list.

Take a systems-based anatomy and physiology course (a requirement for entering the third year program).

Perform volunteer work as a somatic movement educator in a community service setting.

Develop curriculum for integrating somatic movement education into any other discipline.

Create a project with choreography, visual arts, film, writing, or music using SME principles.

Study a related therapeutic, bodywork, or movement discipline.

Study an art discipline.

Personal Sessions

Private Somatic Therapy Session

Personal sessions with certified teachers or practitioners of BodyMindMovement or Body-Mind Centering are required so that you can address personal issues and questions that arise as a result of working with the material. Reports for two individual sessions are required (minimum one hour each).

Complementary Studies

Students are encouraged to complete complementary studies to initiate or advance their mind and body practices as applications of their studies. 100 hours of movement practices and 50 hours of mind or awareness practices are recommended.
